CINEMATHEQUE AT THE CAPITOL- METROPOLIS -SEPT. 23RD
THE COMPLETE METROPOLIS Featuring The Alloy Orchestra Live!
Thursday, September 23, at 7:00 pm
Roger Ebert has called Boston’s Alloy Orchestra “the best in the world at accompanying silent films.” Tonight this internationally-known trio—Terry Donahue, Roger Miller (Mission of Burma), Ken Winokur—comes to the large auditorium of the newly-restored Capitol Theatre at W. 65th and Detroit to perform their signature score—that for Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi spectacle Metropolis. It’s been 10 years since the Alloy accompanied Metropolis live in Cleveland, and this time they apply their distinctive mix of clarinet, accordion, electronics, and junk metal percussion to The Complete Metropolis, a new restoration of Lang’s futuristic epic that is 25 minutes (and 25%) longer than all prior restorations. This new version is the most complete Metropolis we will probably ever see! Missing scenes and subplots represented previously by film stills and intertitles now live again on film. (The footage comes from a 16mm copy of an original release print recently unearthed in Argentina.) For the first time, Lang’s exciting tale of a gleaming futuristic city where the ruling elite lead lives of luxury above ground and worker drones toil on machinery underground, and a robot-led revolt threatens both classes, makes total sense! Even if you saw The Complete Metropolis earlier this year at the Cinematheque or the Cleveland Museum of Art, you did not see it with the Alloy Orchestra’s galvanizing original score. Unmissable! Blu-ray. 150 min. Special admission $19 in advance/$22 day of show; Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $15 advance/$18 day of show. Full-price tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.clevelandcinemas.com. Member & CIA tickets can be purchased in advance only at the Cinematheque box office, or by calling (216) 421-7450. Seats not reserved. No passes, twofers, or radio winners; no Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts will be honored. Free parking next to theatre and at other lots in the Gordon Square Arts District. Special thanks to Jon Forman and Dave Huffman, Cleveland Cinemas. www.alloyorchestra.com; www.kino.com/metropolis/
